Key Stage Two Year 4 Medium Frequency Words

Key Stage Two

Medium Frequency Words Overview

Teachers should expect many Y4 pupils to have little or no difficulty reading most of the words below. However, there may be difficulties in being able to spell them accurately. Many of these words do not follow a regular pattern and others are easily confused. The list is intended as a check for spelling. It is not intended that teachers should go slavishly through the lists, teaching by drilling, though there is an important place for practice, reinforcement and testing. There are many ways in which these words can be investigated and learned eg through grouping them by meanings, common spelling patterns, sound patterns, locating them in dictionaries and other texts, creating mnemonics, inventing and playing word games, proof-reading and checking them in independent writing. The words are grouped for ease of teaching. A complete list is provided below should teachers wish to re-group them to suit the needs of their classes.

I Look I See

I Look I See
I look, I look, I look, I see
I see a world of beauty
I touch, I touch, I touch, I feel
I feel a world around so real
And everything I do
I dedicate to You
Cause You made me

I listen, listen, listen, I hear
I hear the words of God so clear
I read, I read, I read, I know
It helps my knowledge grow
And everything we do
We dedicate to You
Cause You made us
We are for You
I listen, listen, listen, I hear

He sent the Prophet to show us the way
He made Religion perfect that Day
Peace be upon him, upon him we pray
Salatullah, wa salamu alyhi

I sleep I sleep, I sleep, I dream
I dream Im in a garden green
I wish, I wish, I wish I pray
I pray to be here everyday
And everything I do
I dedicate to You
Cause You made me
I am for You

I work, I work, I work, I strive
To make something of my life
I seek, I seek, I seek, I find
I find another hill to climb
And everything we do
We dedicate to You
Cause You made us
We are for You
I look, I look, I look, I see

He sent the Prophet to show us the way
He made Religion perfect that Day
Peace be upon him, upon him we pray

The Geico Gecko

Here's me feeding (yes, ANOTHER feeding video) my Leopard Gecko, Dagon! Quite a friendly little fellow he is, gentle when taking food from my fingers and doesn't mind being stroked one bit. In this video, he kind of goes into a little trance for a few moments. That is, until the waxworm pupae rubs its abdomen across his nose! :)

More Little Mouse Deer Tales

There are three stories about Little Mouse Deer.

In the First, Little Mouse Deer falls into a pit,
but he uses his wits to trick an elephant into the pit too. Then Little Mouse Deer climbs up the elephant and escapes.

In the Second story, Little Mouse Deer tricks a tiger into thinking he is fierce. He tells her that the head of a tiger he has just eaten is in the well. When the tiger looks, she sees her own reflection and thinks it is another tiger.

In the last story, Little Mouse Deer boasts to Gecko about his tricks. Gecko challenges Little Mouse Deer to a race. Gecko tricks Little Mouse Deer and wins the race by using all his brothers and sisters who look just like him.

What if there was educational content for the Nintendo DSi?

What if there was educational content for the Nintendo DSi?

source

Nintendo just announced its latest iteration on the DS handheld gaming device. Called the DSi, it’s receiving plenty of attention from bloggers, gamers, and at least two of my kids (one is a diehard PSP fan, although he’d really just rather have an iPhone and the other is 16 and looks down his nose at mere handheld game systems).

However, a few things caught my eye that might make the DSi a bit more appealing for educational purposes. It has built in wifi (so did the last-generation DS), but now has a built-in web browser and nearly Apple-style App Store. It’s also larger and more capable in terms of multimedia. According to Ars Technica,

The DSi will also come with software allowing you to play with your images and to slow or speed up audio files. While these things may sound more like toys than anything else, it could make the system popular among people learning new languages or practicing playing along to their favorite music. The interface for these features appears easy to use, even playful.

Audiobooks, anyone? Cheap MIDs? Interactive response system? Imagine if a few educationally-minded developers posted free or low-cost educational games on the App Store. Although I have to say that I really see the Android as a serious potential tool for education, this could be another way to get a lot of kids online quickly, especially if the browser and other applications can be spiffed up by motivated developers.

motivate children to read with phonics

http://www.starfall.com/

Starfall.com opened in September of 2002 as a free public service to motivate children to read with phonics. Our systematic phonics approach, in conjunction with phonemic awareness practice is perfect for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, special education, homeschool, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children.

In May of 2009, we released our Starfall Kindergarten Reading and Language Arts Curriculum. The lesson plans motivate kindergarten children by creating an atmosphere of fun and enthusiasm, providing opportunities for child-directed instruction, and facilitating the needs of English language learners and struggling readers learning alongside their peers.

We invite you to visit The Starfall Store for low-cost books and phonics journals that parallel this website.

Rhythm and Rhyme Can Help Your Child Learn to Read

Rhythm and Rhyme Can Help Your Child Learn to Read

Do you want to learn how making music with your child can increase school and life success?

Would you like to improve your child’s brain function, cognitive abilities, social skills and emotional competence through music? Do you want to find out how rhyme can help your child learn to read?

Experts agree that music can strengthen children’s minds and serve as a fundamental skill of learning. As parents we all know that our children enjoy music and most of us have heard of the positive effects of music. If nothing else we have a vague awareness of the Mozart effect. We know that music is beneficial but we don’t always know why.

In recent years there has been a large body of research to support a number of positive effects that music enjoyment and training can have on a young child’s brain function and ability to learn.
The benefits of music include:

* Extending the neural networks in the brain
* Sound discrimination which leads to spelling success
* Increased vocabulary
* Abstract and spatial reasoning which leads to math success
* Improved coordination
* Better concentration skills
* Sharper memory
* More focused listening skills

Both scientists and educators are realizing that early, positive musical experience is uniquely effective in helping children achieve their full potential intellectually, artistically and emotionally.Simply using music on a regular basis with your child, including singing, listening to music, and playing instruments, can reap tremendous benefits. It is important to note that simply listening to music is not enough. Making music is more powerful for children than just listening. It is important for you to provide your child with a solid early childhood education experience that you won’t have to trust to chance but it is even more important to foster a love of learning!

Remember, today’s preschoolers and kindergarteners are expected to know far more than their parents (that’s US!) were at that same age. Start your child out right. While success in the early grades does not guarantee success throughout the school years and beyond, failure in the early grades does virtually guarantee failure in later schooling. Don’t let your child fail and don’t fail your child!

Acronyms

http://www.fun-with-words.com/mnemonics.html

Spelling Acronyms

The following mnemonics are sentences or phrases in which the initial letters of the words spell out a word which many people find rather tricky to spell.

BECAUSE
Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants

ARITHMETIC
A Rat In The House May Eat The Ice Cream

GEOGRAPHY
General Eisenhower's Oldest Girl Rode A Pony Home Yesterday

RHYTHM
Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move

NECESSARY
Not Every Cat Eats Sardines (Some Are Really Yummy)

ARGUMENT
A Rude Girl Undresses; My Eyes Need Taping!

OCEAN
Only Cats' Eyes Are Narrow

And a neat way to remember how to spell POTASSIUM: just remember one tea, two sugars. You can use a similar aide memoire to prevent confusion between DESERTS (like the Sahara) and DESSERTS (like Tiramisu) by remembering that the sweet one has two sugars.

List Order Acronyms

This is certainly one of the most popular mnemonic techniques.
Order of colours in the rainbow, or visual spectrum:
(Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet)
Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain.
Order of taxonomy in biology:
(Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species)
Kids Prefer Cheese Over Fried Green Spinach.

Order of geological time periods:
(Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene, Recent)
Cows Often Sit Down Carefully. Perhaps Their Joints Creak?
Persistent Early Oiling Might Prevent Painful Rheumatism.

Order of Mohs hardness scale, from 1 to 10:
(Talc, Gypsum, Calcite, Fluorite, Apatite, Orthoclase feldspar, Quartz, Topaz, Corundum, Diamond)
Toronto Girls Can Flirt, And Other Queer Things Can Do.

The order of sharps in music, called the "circle of fifths":
(F, C, G, D, A, E, B)
Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle.
And in reverse for flat keys the mnemonic can be neatly reversed:
Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles' Father.

The notes represented by the lines on the treble clef stave (bottom to top):
(E, G, B, D, F)
Every Good Boy Deserves Favour.
And the notes represented by the spaces between the lines:
(F, A, C, E)
Furry Animals Cook Excellently. Or just the word FACE

The notes represented by the lines on the bass clef stave (bottom to top):
(G, B, D, F, A)
Good Boys Do Fine, Always.
And the notes represented by the spaces between the lines:
(A, C, E, G)
All Cows Eat Grass.

The order of planets in average distance from the Sun:
(Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto)
My Very Easy Method: Just Set Up Nine Planets.

A Land Called Paradise by Kareem Salama

A Land Called Paradise by Kareem Salama

Chorus:
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
I wanna go to the valley of the King
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
Wanna see the birds fly and I wanna hear the angels

Sing the praises of my Lord so far above
As I move poetically with the struggle I fall in love
I look to the left, I look to the right, and all I gaze upon
Reveals the source of flowers, rainbows, and the dew at dawn
Some see before and some see in and some see after
I let my sight pierce the chains and see the master

Chorus:
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
I wanna go to the valley of the King
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
Wanna see the birds fly and I wanna hear the angels sing

So many times in my life, I ask myself the question
What got me brought me into all this mess I'm swimming in
But pain is not and neither harm in the pool of bliss
So slap me with your hand or kiss me with your softest kiss
Tell me that you love me or that you don't like me now
Tell me you invite me or that you don't want me around
I won't cry over a world that can't change my life
I'll put my money on what lies ahead in Paradise

Chorus
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
I wanna go to the valley of the King
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
Wanna see the birds fly and I wanna hear the angels sing

I try to do right and love my wife and trade and pray and talk
I can be anywhere, do anything, and I'm mindful of God
I'm pleased in good and happy in harm and now I realize
That I already live in a land called Paradise

Chorus
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
I wanna go to the valley of the King
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
Wanna see the birds fly and I wanna hear the angels

I wanna live in a land called Paradise
I wanna go to the valley of the King
I wanna live in a land called Paradise
Wanna see the birds fly and I wanna hear the angels sing

I wanna hear the angels sing...

Your mother by Rashid Bhikha

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: A person came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: Who among the people is most deserving my companionship (of a kind treatment from me?) He said: Your mother. He, again, said: Then who (is the next one)? He said: It is your mother (who deserves the best treatment from you). He said: Then who (is the next one)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: It is your mother. He (again) said: Then who? Thereupon he (The Prophet (peace be upon him)) said: It is your father.
